Workplace, Rights & Benefits

Work, dignity, and access to basic supports are human rights, not privileges. Justice means forcing employers, institutions, and governments to answer when they fail to respect those rights.

When livelihood, health, or the ability to support a family is on the line, the system can feel cold, technical, and stacked against the individual. Retained Legal Services stands as an advocate in workplace and benefits disputes, focused on fairness, accessibility, and accountability.

Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario

The Human Rights Code protects against discrimination and harassment in employment, housing, and services. Cases often involve:

  • Discrimination based on disability, gender, race, age, family status, or other protected grounds

  • Workplace harassment or poisoned work environments

  • Denial of equal access to housing or public services

Retained Legal Services will there, to draft and file applications, prepares evidence, and provide representation at mediations or hearings to ensure every voice is heard and dignity respected.

Workplace-Related Disputes

Work isn’t just about a paycheck — it’s about security and dignity. Representation is available for:

  • Licensing or professional compliance issues affecting the ability to work

  • Wrongful or unfair treatment in non-union workplaces

  • Matters before regulatory bodies affecting small businesses or self-employed workers

Retained Legal Services works to protect the ability to earn a living and navigate complex regulatory frameworks.

Social Benefits Tribunal (Ontario)

When Ontario Works or ODSP benefits are denied, reduced, or cut off, appeals are available. Common disputes include:

  • Denials of disability status

  • Overpayment claims and repayment demands

  • Terminations or reductions of support

Retained Legal Services prepares applications, organizes medical and financial evidence, and provides representation at hearings to fight for the supports clients are entitled to.

Social Security Tribunal of Canada

Federal benefits are often denied on technical grounds, leaving people without income or stability. Appeals include:

  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP) disability denials

  • Old Age Security (OAS) issues

  • Employment Insurance (EI) disqualifications or overpayments

Retained Legal Services represents clients at both the General and Appeal Divisions of the Social Security Tribunal, ensuring cases are properly argued and supported.

Why It Matters

Employment and benefits disputes aren’t just about paperwork,  they’re about survival. Losing a job, a benefit, or fair treatment destabilizes families and communities.

Retained Legal Services provides clear, determined advocacy to hold governments, employers, and regulators accountable to the laws they are bound to uphold.
